Exchanging ETH to XMR: A Recent Experience

Today is October 28, 2025, and I’ve been actively involved in the cryptocurrency space for about seven years now․ I’ve always been a proponent of privacy coins, and Monero (XMR) has consistently been my go-to for transactions where I want a higher degree of anonymity․ Recently, I needed to convert some Ethereum (ETH) I had accumulated into XMR, and I wanted to share my experience, as it can be a bit daunting for newcomers․

Why I Chose to Exchange

I initially acquired the ETH through staking rewards on a platform․ While staking was profitable, I felt uncomfortable holding a large amount of ETH long-term due to the transparency of the Ethereum blockchain․ I prefer the privacy features of Monero, so converting was a logical step for me․ I did some research, and the current rate, as I saw on several exchanges, was around 1 ETH for 12․86944353 XMR – though this fluctuates, of course․

My First Attempt: MorphToken

I started by trying MorphToken․com, as I had read good things about it and appreciated that it didn’t require any KYC (Know Your Customer) or registration․ The interface was straightforward․ I selected Ethereum and Monero from the dropdown menus, entered a refund ETH address (a good practice in case something goes wrong), and then pasted my Monero address․

The site generated an ETH address for me to send my funds․ I carefully double-checked the address and sent the ETH from my MetaMask wallet․ I was a little nervous at first, as you always are when sending crypto, but the transaction confirmed relatively quickly․ Within about 30 minutes, the XMR appeared in my wallet! I was impressed with the speed and ease of the process․ I did notice a small fee, which was clearly displayed before I initiated the trade․

Exploring Cake Wallet

After the success with MorphToken, I wanted to explore other options․ I use Cake Wallet for my Monero, and I discovered they have an integrated exchange feature․ It’s incredibly convenient․ I tapped the circular arrow icon, selected ETH to XMR, entered my ETH wallet address as the refund address, and then initiated the exchange․

Cake Wallet provided me with an ETH address and the amount to send․ I sent the ETH, and again, the XMR arrived in my Cake Wallet balance within a reasonable timeframe – around 45 minutes this time․ The fees were comparable to MorphToken․ The in-app experience was very smooth and user-friendly․

A Note on Security and Alternatives

I’ve always been a bit wary of centralized exchanges, even the well-known ones․ I prefer solutions that allow me to maintain control of my private keys․ I’ve heard good things about Rubic Exchange for cross-chain swaps, and I might try that in the future․ I also understand that some people prefer using Bitcoin as an intermediary, leveraging the security of Electrum wallet, but I found the direct ETH to XMR swaps to be efficient enough for my needs․

Important Warning: I’ve been seeing a lot of reports about scams in the crypto space lately – fake NFTs, exchanges, and airdrops․ Be extremely cautious about clicking on links and always double-check addresses before sending any funds․ If something seems too good to be true, it probably is!

Final Thoughts

Overall, my experience exchanging ETH to XMR was positive․ Both MorphToken and Cake Wallet provided reliable and relatively quick conversions․ I’m happy to have my funds in Monero, and I feel more confident about my privacy․ Remember to always do your own research, prioritize security, and be aware of the risks involved in cryptocurrency transactions․
