My Bitcoin to Monero Exchange Experience with ChangeNOW

Today is November 7th, 2025, and I’ve been actively involved in the cryptocurrency space for about seven years now. I’ve seen a lot of fluctuations, and I’ve learned the hard way that diversifying is key. Recently, I decided to exchange some of my Bitcoin (BTC) holdings for Monero (XMR). I wanted to share my experience, as it involved a bit of research and a few different platforms.

Why Monero?

I chose Monero primarily for its enhanced privacy features. Bitcoin, while the first and most well-known cryptocurrency, isn’t inherently private. Transactions are traceable on the blockchain. I wanted something with stronger anonymity, and Monero consistently ranks as a top choice for privacy-focused users. I also believed, and still do, that XMR has potential for growth, especially as concerns about financial surveillance increase.

The Exchange Rate Landscape

Before I did anything, I spent a good amount of time checking the exchange rates. As of today, the rates I saw varied slightly across different platforms. I observed rates ranging from approximately 279 XMR to 291 XMR per 1 BTC. I even saw one platform quoting 283 XMR, but it had significantly higher fees. It’s crucial to compare! I found that the rate fluctuated throughout the day, so timing is also a factor. I noticed a 0.12% change in the rate over the last 24 hours on some exchanges, and a 2.736% change on others. It’s a dynamic market, that’s for sure.

My Chosen Platform: ChangeNOW

After researching several options – including some of the more popular centralized exchanges – I decided to use ChangeNOW. I’d used them before for smaller swaps, and I appreciated their no-KYC (Know Your Customer) policy for smaller amounts. I didn’t want to jump through hoops providing personal information for this particular transaction. They also seemed to offer a competitive rate and a relatively quick processing time. I did read some reviews mentioning occasional delays, but my previous experiences had been positive.

The Exchange Process – Step-by-Step

  1. Entered my BTC address: I carefully copied and pasted my Bitcoin receiving address into the ChangeNOW interface. Double-checking this is critical. A mistake here could mean losing your funds.
  2. Entered my XMR address: Similarly, I entered my Monero address. Monero addresses are a bit longer and more complex than Bitcoin addresses, so I was extra cautious.
  3. Reviewed the Rate: ChangeNOW showed me the estimated exchange rate, which was around 281.46 XMR for 1 BTC at that moment.
  4. Confirmed the Transaction: I confirmed the details and initiated the exchange.
  5. Sent the BTC: ChangeNOW provided me with a Bitcoin address to send my BTC to. I sent 0.5 BTC from my hardware wallet (a Ledger Nano S, which I highly recommend for security).
  6. Waited for Confirmation: The transaction took about 20-30 minutes to confirm on the Bitcoin blockchain.
  7. Received the XMR: Once the BTC transaction was confirmed, ChangeNOW automatically sent the equivalent amount of XMR to my Monero address. I received 140.73 XMR.

Fees and Considerations

ChangeNOW charges a fee for their service, which was around 0.5% in my case. This is a standard fee for a non-custodial exchange. I also had to pay the standard Bitcoin network transaction fee, which was relatively low at the time; It’s important to factor in both of these fees when calculating the final amount of XMR you’ll receive.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I was very satisfied with my experience exchanging BTC to XMR using ChangeNOW. The process was straightforward, the rate was competitive, and the transaction was completed relatively quickly. I did my research, I was careful with my addresses, and I understood the fees involved. I’m now holding my XMR in a secure Monero wallet, and I’m optimistic about its future potential. I’ve learned that staying informed about exchange rates and choosing a reputable platform are the most important things when swapping cryptocurrencies.
